How to study the Bible - Soap

By Web Team | Grow

Another simple way to study the Bible is using the SOAP method. SOAP is a study method that includes journaling as a key part of the study.

So grab your Bible and a notebook, and let’s learn about SOAP.

The S in soap is Scripture.

Write down the verse or verses you’ll be studying. I’ve found that writing helps me focus on each word individually and the passage as a whole.

The O in soap is Observations.

When reading, it is great to examine the verses you wrote done and ask yourself.

  • What jumps out to you in the passage?
  • Who wrote it?
  • Who is the audience?
  • What’s one thing you didn’t notice before?
  • What seems exciting or unusual?
  • What comes before and after the verses?
  • Is there repetition, comparison, or contrast?

These observations may start with the obvious but gradually become deeper as you notice and take note.

The A in soap is Application.

Now that you have written down the verse or verses and taken note of observations. It’s now time to apply God’s Word to your life in practical ways.

This is the part where you personalize your study of Scripture.

As you read over the text, how does it apply to you? Is there a specific action you need to take or a confession you need to make?

Write out the steps needed to put it into motion in your life if it's an action. Write out everything that comes to mind.

Lastly, the P in soap is Pray.

This is an important step in reading and understanding God’s Word. It is how we respond to God’s Word with your own words.

Accumulating head knowledge about God is of little use if it stops there. Heart transformation is what He’s after, and that’s only possible through the work Holy Spirit.

Pray that the seed of Scripture falls on good soil in your heart so that it will take root and produce fruit. Praise God for His what He revealed in the passage. Confess any sin that has come to light during this time of studying.

Thank Him for His Word and His care. And ask the Holy Spirit to continue growing you into a disciple of Jesus.

Write out your prayers and keep the journal to track what God has done in your life.
